Discover Economics was delighted to accompany the finalists of their Young Economist of the Year competition, sponsored by KPMG and FT Schools, to Downing Street and the Treasury in September. The final five entries had been selected from nearly 3,000 students who entered this year, discussing topics ranging from the economic impact of the pandemic to subsidies for electric cars. The young people were fortunate to receive a tour of the illustrious buildings, as well as a talk with Chief Economic Advisor and Head of the Government Economic Service, Sam Beckett.
The final was held on the 10 October at the KPMG offices in Canary Wharf. Judged by incredible economists from the corporate world, broadcasting and charity sectors, the day was a fantastic celebration of the students’ hard work. After much deliberation, the winners were announced to be the team from The Tiffin Girls’ School, Harriet Turnbull, Medha Kumar and Neha Sathishkanna, on the topic of ‘what is the economic impact of the growing gig economy?’ Look out for their published article in the Financial Times soon.
