We provide a facility linked to the online published article for supporting material that is not essential for inclusion in its main text or appendix, but would nevertheless benefit the reader. Oxford University Press features this under the heading “Supplementary data”.
In line with our replication policy, the supporting information normally includes a replication package. It also regularly contains an online appendix, which is separate from any appendix in the published article. Exceptionally, it may also include other material.
Authors may include an online appendix and other supporting material with the submission of their paper and request that it is published as supporting information. The editor handling the paper may also require that certain material is included in the supporting information. In either case, the supporting information must necessarily be inessential for an understanding of the contribution of the paper and its conclusions, but should contain information that is additional or complementary and directly relevant to the article’s content. Such information might include further detail concerning estimation methods or tests, additional technical appendices, additional or extended data sets and data analysis, additional figures and tables, and details of simulation results. The editor handling the paper has final discretion over whether such material will be included as supporting information.
