Statement from the European Job Market

The 4th European Job Market for Economists (EJME) will be held virtually from Wednesday, December 15 to Saturday, December 18, 2021. The European Job Market is organised by the European Economic Association (EEA), Royal Economic Society (RES) and Spanish Economic Society (SEA).

The European Job Market for this year was planned to take place in-person in Barcelona, with the University of Barcelona School of Economics hosting the event. However, the uncertainty involving COVID-19 has necessitated a virtual European Job Market in 2021.

The organisers have made this decision with careful consideration of the best interests of the job candidates. Holding first round job market interviews virtually is expected to ensure the following benefits:

  • Alleviation of candidate stress about how the market will play out and allow job candidates to plan and prepare accordingly,
  • Ensure equal access to job opportunities for candidates across a wide range of departments and European countries (which face potentially different COVID situations and/or restrictions), and
  • Ensure that candidates remain healthy through the first round interview process and increase the chances of being able to conduct in-person fly outs.

In the Autumn, the RES will be hosting a webinar on ‘How to Prepare’ for the EJME. At the event in December, the RES will provide a ‘Meet the Editors’ session. More details on this will follow.

The 2022 European Job Market is planned to return as an in-person event in Berlin.
