The Royal Economic Society held our flagship Annual Public Lecture 2022 last week at the University of Reading on 8 June. It was followed by our second APL on 14 June, taking place at the University of Glasgow.

Our speaker, Professor Jagjit S. Chadha talked about ‘Money Minders: The parables, trade-off and lags of central banking.

Established in 2001, our Annual Public Lecture provides an opportunity for school students to watch internationally renowned economists present their research. Principally aimed at sixth form students, the APL has become an established part of the senior school calendar and is free to attend.

Each host venue planned various fringe events to ensure students had a great visit:

University of Reading

The Reading APL was well received with attendance of around 70 sixth formers, as well as the general public. Former RES President Professor Tim Besley also attended, providing an opening speech.

In addition to the lecture, the University of Reading offered several morning taster workshops on the following themes:

  • What has Economics got to say about Climate Change?
  • Can Economics help with the Gender Pay Gap?
  • What is Behavioural Economics?
  • Could you do Monetary Policy?

The University of Glasgow hosted a visiting day for local schools. The aim of the day was to inform, inspire and enthuse young people about Economics, and more broadly about considering university as an option for the future.

Over 150 students and 50 non-students attended the lecture. The APL 2022 began with an active learning session from Jack Meaning and Rupal Patel from the Bank of England, followed by Jagjit Chadha’s lecture on ‘The Money Minders’. The sessions were received highly by the attendance and many great insights were given about economic science and the industry.
