March FAQ's: RES Pride in London 2024

The Pride in London stand for three key values:

  1. Visibility: providing a presence of LGBTQ+ across the city on a physical and virtual platform.
  2. Unity: Encourage unity amongst the LGBTQ+ community by supporting its grassroots
  3. Equality: Fight for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals to be equal to the majority in every way

The RES supports these values. We want to celebrate and support the representation of LGBTQIA+ economists, by participating in a safe and vibrant space through Pride in London.

The Parade in London is organised by Pride in London; a not-for-profit organisation run by staff and volunteers committed to advancing equality and diversity. The parade is the UK’s largest and most diverse Pride event, representing members from LGBT+ communities, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning, intersex, non-binary, asexual, polysexual, genderqueer, and gender variant. Their aim is to raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues and advocate for the freedoms that will enable everyone to live their lives on equal footing.

Pride in London have launched a new campaign to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community through #WeAreEverywhere. The underlying message is to champion the visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community everywhere in the whole community. The RES will be using this hashtag alongside the #ProudRES. Don’t forget to tag us when posting on socials.

Our provisional designated time slot to join the Form Up Area will be between 11am-12pm. There is up to 1 hour waiting time where we are allocated our specific order, given our RES Pride Banner and meet others who are marching in our section. The march itself takes approximately 1 hour. (Allow at least three hours overall). Food, toilets and water are available around the Form Up Area.

We will specify a meeting point near the Form Up Area for all RES participants to meet and be issued wristbands. We will then walk together to the Form Up Area to our designated entry point near Old Park Lane. The parade will begin at Piccadilly Circus, moving to Haymarket Hall, then Whitehall. Final details will be sent out as soon as these are issued, ahead of the day and will include a map showing the route.

This event is a celebration of LGBTQIA+ economists. You can be from the LGBTQIA+ community or allies (supporters) of the community. If demand exceeds the 50 places we have, then we will prioritise those who identify as being from the LGBTQIA+ community.

You do not need to come out to participate in this event. Coming out is personal to each individual and everyone attending should assume all participants are supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community (whether outwardly identifying or not). You may prefer to mark on the EOI form to indicate that you are an ally. (Although note that if demand is high we will prioritise those who have ticked they identify as LGBTQIA+.)

All information gathered through the form will be solely for the purpose of organising this event. Sensitive personal data will be restricted to the Member Operations Director (who identifies as Lesbian) and the Governance and Advocacy Officer. Following the event, all identifying data will be confidentially destroyed.

We do not know the level of demand until we have had all the expressions of interest in by the 31st May 2024. If you would like to bring someone along, please indicate this on the EOI form and we will confirm after the closing date if we can accommodate additional family and friends.

You should bring any snacks or drinks you may need. Clothing suitable for the weather and suntan lotion if necessary. We recommend you bring a refillable water bottle to top up from the water stations throughout the route. You are also welcome to bring any accessories to celebrate Pride, although the RES will provide some small items.

Accessible toilets will be available in each block but you will need a RADAR key to access this. There will be safe spaces in the Parade with a dedicated volunteer to support the spaces. This includes an access bus which will be a respite space for any registered participants with access cards. If you require this, please fill out the form, here: https://prideinlondon.org/parade/accessibility/. You are more than welcome to bring noise cancelling headphones or earplugs to help with managing noise and sensory needs.

After the march members will be free to roam around in the various stages and events spaces:

  • Leicester Square – LGBTQIA+ Women’s Stage
  • Golden Square: World Stage
  • Soho Square: Trans & Non-Binary Stage
  • Dean Street: Cabaret Stage
  • Victoria Embankment Gardens: Family Area
  • Trafalgar Square: Main Stage

We will communicate the outcome from the expression of interest in early June. We will provide an online briefing session around mid-June with supporting documentation of all final details sent out shortly after this. If you have any questions, you can contact Liza: resoffice@res.org.uk

There will also be a WhatsApp group-chat created for all those who wish to be added, for easier communication within the RES participants.

If you are interested in donating to support LGBTQ+ Economists and the Society’s work, please reach out to Liza: resoffice@res.org.uk
