Expressions of interest invited to host the RES Annual Conference

The Royal Economic Society (RES) is seeking expressions of interest to host the RES Annual Conference. We are currently planning venues for the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 conferences.

The Annual Conference is a high-quality conference covering all areas of economics. It attracts around 750 participants from universities worldwide and from media and policy circles.

Traditionally taking place over three days in the week before Easter, it generates significant international interest and media coverage, and offers a great opportunity to showcase UK-based economics departments, business schools and host institutions. The typical conference programme comprises:

  • 500 general paper presentations in around 25 parallel sessions of 3/4 papers across 5 time slots
  • Around 18 Special Sessions of 3/4 papers each, across 6 parallel sessions in 3 time slots
  • 3 Keynote Lectures featuring distinguished speakers
  • A keynote address from the outgoing RES President
  • A plenary session (often on an area of economic policy)
  • A welcome drinks reception on the first evening of the conference
  • A conference dinner on the second evening of the conference
  • ‘RES Presents’ events, taking place in the early evening, aimed at engaging the wider public

Some of these events, such as the reception, gala dinner and RES Presents events, may, or may not, be held on the host institution’s premises. In addition, there is a related PhD symposium that dovetails with the conference and has often taken place on the day after it. There is also the possibility to hold smaller events of importance for the economics profession on the day before the conference; for example, Warwick 2019 was preceded by a mentoring workshop organised by the Women’s Committee.

The conference programme, including the keynote lectures, is put together by a Programme Committee overseen by a Programme Chair selected by the RES.

The host institution must be able to provide suitable venue space for the sessions and large lectures. The host institution offers to support the conference in a number of ways including through local organisation. (At an early stage in the process you will need to identify an academic sponsor from you department/school with whom the RES can liaise during discussion about your expression of interest.)

The RES has a conference budget, supported by conference fees, to support the arrangement of the event and offers financial support to those otherwise unable to attend. The Society aims to run its conferences on a cost-neutral basis, and encourages host institutions to provide additional sponsorship of the event to achieve this. Potential hosts wishing to propose the use of external facilities (e.g. hotels for accommodation, and venues for social events and public engagement activities) should provide examples of these being available in the local area. They should also consider whether suitable transport links are available.

For questions, please contact the Conference Team on events@res.org.uk and/or Michael McMahon (Conference Secretary, michael.mcmahon@economics.ox.ac.uk). Those who wish to express an interest should notify the RES Conference Team on the above email address (events@res.org.uk) by Friday September 13 2019.

We will choose a selection of the potential hosts for a more detailed evaluation before selecting future hosts.
