Organised by research students for research students, the PhD Conference is supported by the Society and takes place annually.
The Conference aim is to bring together economists at different stages of their research to encourage discussion and the sharing of knowledge. Submissions are welcome from PhD students and early career researchers in any field of economics.
The 2024 Conference was hosted at the University of Portsmouth. PhD Students from Portsmouth coordinated the programme and reviewed papers and posters.
Keynote Lecture: This years keynote wase given by Professor Martin Kocher, University of Vienna and current Federal Minister of Labour and Economy of Austria. Martin’s lecture is titled: A Career in Politics as an Economics Academic
Plenary Lecture: Beyond the Boundaries – Forming Collaborations and Working as Part of Multidisciplinary Teams. Dr Zahra Murad and Professor Joe Cox, University of Portsmouth.

The conference is free to attend.
We ask that all participants look to their own institution/organisation in the first instance for financial support for travel and accommodation (via – scholarships, departmental grants, conference budgets, etc.).
For those who cannot fund the expense from other sources, the RES has a small budget to cover travel:
Attendees can apply for up to £100 to cover (UK) travel to and from Portsmouth. Travel must be booked in advance, not on the day.

University of Vienna
Martin Kocher was born in 1973 in Salzburg and grew up in Altenmarkt/Zauchensee. After his studies in Economics at the University of Innsbruck, he worked there as Research Assistant at the Department for Public Finance. He continued to pursue an international academic career at universities in Munich, Amsterdam, Norwich and Goteborg.
From 2016 to 2021, Martin Kocher was Scientific Director at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) in Vienna as well as Head of the Competence Centre for Behavioral Economics “Insight Austria” at the IHS. Kocher was also President of the Austrian Fiscal Advisory Council (FISK).
Martin was appointed as Federal Minister for Digital and Economic Affairs on 11 May 2022. Since 18 July 2022, Martin Kocher is Federal Minister of Labour and Economy.
RES Student Membership is £20.00. You do not need to be a member to attend the RES PhD Conference.
