The RES is dedicated to supporting PhD students.
The RES Scholars Fund was established to support students and early career researchers in attending and presenting their work at the RES Annual Conference. The fund also creates a community and gives Scholars access to senior academics as well as peers at the conference.
Congratulations to the following PhD students who presented their work at the 2025 RES Annual Conference in Birmingham. All their papers received an “excellent” grade by the Conference Committee. The RES, with the support of the Fund’s sponsor, the University of Birmingham, were delighted to provide all Scholars’ with financial support to attend and present work.

15 October 2024 | Now closed | Submit a paper or poster application via Oxford Abstracts, our submission platform (one paper or poster per applicant). Note the Reference ID which you will need for your Scholars Fund application form. |
15 October 2024 | Scholars Fund applications open | ALL applicants must include: · Reference ID number of conference paper, or poster (you will have received this via email from Oxford Abstracts) · Evidence of career stage in the form of a letter or similar · Recommendation and evidence should applicant be applying for the enhanced fund (see eligibility criteria) · Details on what funding you require and what the funding will cover. |
13 January 2025 (23.55 GMT) | Deadline for poster and paper applications | Those applying to present will be notified in early March if they’ve been accepted to present at the conference. |
14 March (23.55 GMT) | Scholars Fund closing date | By this date, those who have applied to present will know if they have been accepted. |
31 March (week of) | Outcome emails | You will be notified if you have been awarded a fund along with further instructions |
11 April | Deadline to book | All RES Scholars need to book to attend the RES Conference as well as join the RES as a member. You can purchase a bundle conference ticket which includes a conference ticket and RES membership. |
11 April | Submit profile | Scholars need to provide a headshot and short biography to be added to the RES Website and conference app. Scholars will be promoted via the RES website and conference app, on completing your application form you will tick a box which gives the RES permission to share your details. |
30 June-2 July | RES Annual Conference | University of Birmingham |
8 August | Deadline to submit claim for funding | After the Conference Those awarded will need to submit a certificate of attendance (available from the conference desk), as well as a completed expenses claim form (emailed to you at the point of award). Thereafter, you will be refunded via a bank transfer. |
