As part of the RES Doctoral Training Programme (RES DTP), we are hosting an in-person workshop to help those PhD students aiming to attend the Economics Job Market at the end of 2026/early 2027 to maximise the impact from their research.
The workshop will focus on the writing and presentation of participants’ draft job market papers, drawing out the paper’s main findings and their potential impact, either in the context of the literature or in terms of their policy or real world relevance, to improve job market and publication chances. On the day, we will go through the impact possibilities of each paper, providing helpful and meaningful feedback for each student.
The workshop will take place on June 18 in central London.
University of St Andrews
David Jaeger is a Professor of Economics and Public Policy. His research interests are in applied microeconomics, particularly labour economics, health economics, policy analysis, and applied econometrics. He has also worked on terrorism and conflict. His work has been published in the American Economic Review, the Review of Economics and Statististics, the Journal of Labor Economics, the Journal of Public Economics, and the Journal of the American Statistical Association, among others.

National Institue of Economic and Social Research (NIESR)
Larissa Marioni is a Principal Economist at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), a Research Associate at the Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE), a Research Associate at The Productivity Institute (TPI) and a UKRI Policy Fellow Alumna.
Larissa’s research interests lie primarily in labour economics, productivity, and public policy. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton and has extensive experience applying quantitative methods to investigate a wide range of economic matters.
Economics Observatory
Romesh Vaitilingam is an economics writer, communications consultant and Editor-in-Chief of the Economics Observatory (ECO). He is the author of several books and reports on economics, finance, business and public policy. His work also involves consultancy for the economic research and policy-making community, including the Centre for Economic Policy Research and VoxEU, the European Economic Association, the IGM Forum’s Economic Experts Panels and the Royal Economic Society.
The Job Market Paper Support Workshop is intended for PhD students in UK institutions who are typically in their third year of study, aiming to attend the Job Market in at the end of 2026/early 2027, and have a draft paper they want to work on.
Participants will be asked to submit their paper and an impact summary prior to the workshop for consideration from both the workshop hosts and peers.
Workshop participants do not need to be RES members. Priority will be given to ESRC-funded students and those who might not have access to similar support in their host institutions.
This workshop is free to attend. The RES are able to provide financial support for travel to PhD candidates who do not receive a training allowance.
Applications are now open. You will need to provide a short academic CV; a first, complete draft of your job market paper; and a short reference letter from your supervisor, which will need to confirm whether you need support with travel costs.
