This master class is organized into three parts.
The first part focuses on the history of ideas about economic development from “The wealth of nations” to randomised controlled trials. This section aims to provide an understanding of how development economics has evolved and how its relationship with mainstream economics has changed over time.
The second part covers key topics in economic development, with a particular emphasis on labor. We will explore the ways in which the organization of labor evolves throughout the development process, examining its impact on poverty and economic growth.
The third part covers the methods used in development economics research. It begins with an explanation of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), with focus on field implementation and ethics. Following this, we will explore alternative methods, both empirical and theoretical, that complement or challenge the use of RCTs.
The masterclass aims to provide a map of the field of economic development.
