Overview
The effect of immigration on employment and wages is one of the most fundamental issues in labor economics. A large literature has addressed this issue focusing on estimates of the elasticity of the labor demand curve. However, numerous mechanisms shape the labor market response to a flow of immigrants. Besides its effect on the wage rate, immigration possibly affects the composition of workers active in the economy and changes the mix of factors of production. Importantly, the labor market structure is a fundamental determinant of the shape of observed employment and wages adjustments.
To advance our understanding of the economic effects of immigration a recent literature in economics introduces novel micro data – e.g., matched employer–employee data or individual panel data – and analyzes it with new theory and new empirical strategies – e.g., allowing for firm level variation and firm heterogeneity, and various forms of labor market power.
This special issue aims at collecting papers on this frontier, which helps explore how wages and employment adjust to immigrant-induced labor supply shocks.
