Vacancy: Conference Secretary

Applications are now open to serve as a Conference Secretary for the Royal Economic Society (RES) Conference Committee.

Background

The RES Annual Conference is the Society’s flagship event, bringing together hundreds of academic and professional economists to present the latest developments in economics and showcase their real-world application. The conference currently runs as a three-day event, with the former PhD conference now integrated into the main conference. It also offers an income generation opportunity both for direct sponsorship and as part of wider partnership packages.

The Conference Secretary holds a leading role in ensuring the conference is aligned with the Society’s strategic objectives. A Programme Chair and Deputy Programme Chair are appointed for each conference, who take responsibility for the detailed academic program for that year. The operational delivery, financial management and promotion of the conference is managed by the RES office. The role is a key position for the Society and requires close collaboration with relevant trustees and office staff, as well as the ability to shape and provide strategic direction for the Conference and its affiliated activities.

Key responsibilities:

Liaise with RES board

Make recommendations and agree with the RES President and Trustee Board on strategic matters  including:

  • Overall scope and direction of the conference content and format, proposing change and future development where appropriate
  • Reflect on, and where appropriate propose changes to, the event format, taking into account RES strategy and how the conference fits with other initiatives
  • Lead the process for decisions on the location of future RES Annual Conferences.

 

Liaise with RES staff and officers

  • Work with the RES office, mainly the Training & Events Manager, Member Operations Director and Commercial Director, to ensure the conference meets its financial targets, including  through sponsorship and other income generation opportunities. 
  • Provide input to conference-related communications, as needed.

 

Chair the RES Conference Committee Meetings

  • Chair the Conference committee which oversees the operational delivery of the conference (meetings in March, August, November)
  • Report to RES Trustee Board on relevant matters
  • Ensure effective liaison between incoming and outgoing Programme Chairs.
