Vacancy: Publications Committee Chair

Background

The RES’s strategy for 2024-28 makes the following commitment on publishing. 

The Society’s publications have for decades facilitated knowledge exchange between thousands of economists globally, at different career stages, and from within and outside academia. We will explore new publishing possibilities to encourage a wider diversity of authors and outputs and provide more opportunities for our members to publish their work. As the business models of academic journals change, we will grow the number of articles our journals publish in order to remain financially sustainable”.

The Publications Committee Chair plays a crucial role in leading the committee’s efforts to oversee the scholarly publishing activities of the Royal Economic Society, ensuring that the Society’s strategic and financial goals for its publications are achieved. This position involves providing strategic direction, ensuring effective communication, and fostering collaboration among committee members and with other RES activities and commitments. Reporting to the RES Trustee Board, the Chair will work closely with the Journal Editors-in-Chief and RES office staff.

Person Specification

The chair of the RES Publications Committee will be a senior economist with a strong publications record and previous experience as an editor and/or as a member of a Publications Committee. They will also bring an understanding of the financial aspects of society publishing and its importance to the overall sustainability of the organisation.

Role responsibilities

The Chair of the Publications Committee will:

  • Provide effective leadership to the Publications Committee, ensuring that the committee’s activities align with the Society’s mission and the strategic and financial goals for its journals articulated in the Society’s strategy outlined above
  • Conduct regular committee meetings (including the production of agenda and minutes)
  • Generate and develop the strategic publication goals of the Society in collaboration with other committees and events of the Society where possible and appropriate
  • Oversee the financial aspects of the Society’s publications, collaborating with RES office staff and the Honorary Treasurer to develop and review budgets for publication-related activities
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Publications Committee and the Trustee Board, providing regular updates on the committee’s activities, achievements, and challenges
  • Communicate effectively with the Journal Editors-in-Chief to convey information or decisions made by the RES Trustee Board and/or Publications Committee
  • Be a member of the RES Editorial Appointments Committee, which is responsible for appointing the editors of The Economic Journal and The Econometrics Journal
  • Adhere to the RES Code of Conduct and be committed to achieving the four strategic priorities of the RES Strategy 2024 – 2028.

Term: Three years, commencing in October 2024.

The role is unpaid. Expenses will be reimbursed in line with the Society’s expenses policy. The RES office will provide administrative support. This is a key role and will play an integral part in executing the RES 2024–2028 Strategy.
