2022 Royal Economic Society Prize

The RES is pleased to announce that the 2022 Royal Economic Society Prize has been awarded to Jonathan F. Schulz for the article ‘Kin Networks and Institutional Development’.

The Royal Economic Society Prize is awarded annually for the best paper published in The Economic Journal by a committee consisting of the RES President, the Editor-in-Chief of The Economic Journal and one member of RES Council.

The paper was published in the October 2022 issue of The Economic Journal. You can read the article here.

The prize was awarded for the paper for the following reasons:

  • The study improves understanding of how participatory institutions emerged and prospered in Europe.
  • The author’s findings on the consequences of marriage regulations brought about by the Catholic church are novel, important for the development of medieval communes, and empirically sound.
  • The paper is also a great example of how newly collected data can speak to a topical issue in economics in a powerful and policy relevant way.
